CHAPTER SIX

If the dream had left me rattled and tense, not hearing a word from Sara the next day was far worse.

Sure, the sex Wednesday night had placated me for a while, but by Thursday evening my mood had turned foul. I pace from room to sprawling room early Friday morning, knowing that if I don't hear from Sara by tonight that I'll likely only hear from her when she's finished loading her suitcases into her dad's car—if she even bothers to stop by—before he takes her to the airport Saturday night.

We hire a maid to come by a few times a week, but I'm so restless that I straighten antique rugs and use a duster on already gleaming wooden surfaces. Little particles of grime make a plume in the air as I whisk the duster around haphazardly. I sneeze so hard I nearly pop my eardrums. Christ! I hope we pay the help enough to do all this shit . . . and why has no one thrown out this obviously filthy and worthless duster?

I scrub at my nose and leave the dirty duster on the mantle over the hearth. The wine cellar hasn't been reorganized in quite some time, I decide, when I realize I'm probably making more messes than I'm cleaning up in all these spotless rooms.

Sometime later, Adam swings by for lunch, and I'm thrilled to have someone to distract me from my incessant tidying.

"What'll it be, Captain?" I tease him as he sits at the table and looks at me expectantly.

I always keep a healthy stash of meals prepped for instances like Adam gracing me with his presence midday, or if I'm feeling too lazy to make us a fresh dinner. It's the least I can do since I don't work anymore and depend entirely on my husband’s money.

"Do we have any more of that delicious beer chili?"

It always pleases me when he requests something that I’ve recently made, especially when the dish is my own special recipe, like he knows I both worked hard and took great pride in making it for us. I nod happily and go to dig through our large freezer chest in the walk-in pantry. After I find two glass Tupperware portions and finish heating it up for us, I join my husband for lunch at the table. We eat in companionable silence for a while before I lock my eyes onto his and give him a timid smile.

"Have you heard anything else from Sara?" I ask softly.

"I think she's home now, but no."

"Oh."

He must hear the absolute defeat in my voice because he reaches out and squeezes my hand with a concerned half smile.

"I never texted her back though, so—"

"You what?" My tone is so sharp that he flinches away from me and his hand turns into a fist.

"What was I even supposed to say?" he asks defensively, and he pushes his nearly empty bowl away as he straightens in his seat.

"Anything!" I close my eyes for a moment and take a deep breath.
